Please read at least 2o minutes each day! Think about what you read: ask questions, picture it in your head, make a connection to yourself, summarize the passage, make predictions, and evaluate the book!
Reading Contest of the Month
In addition to the Pizza Hut Book-It Program which runs October thru March and the 6 Flags Read to Succeed Program which provides students with a free ticket to 6 Flags with only 600 minutes read, we will be having the following classroom reading contests to encourage reading this year.
September – Xtreme Reader Photo
Have your picture taken in the craziest place that you read! Under the bed with a flashlight, in a tree, at the beach, anywhere! The crazier the better! Just take the picture and email it to me! I will print and post them for all to see! Due September 29th.
October – Boo-ks!
Draw a pumpkin. Easy right? Now make it into one of your favorite book characters! It does not need to be orange, just round! Write the name of the book, author, and character on the back. Due October 27th.
November – Where is That From!?
Each week a page from a famous children’s book will be posted. Students will enter their book guess and a drawing will be held each week!
December – You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover
This month you can choose one book from the basket to read. However, you will not be able to see its cover as it will be gift wrapped for the holidays! Unwrap, read, and tell me about it to receive this month's prize!
January – Can a Book Really Fit in a Jar?
This month I will be cutting apart the script of a book and putting it into a jar. Can you figure out what the title and author of the book is?
February – BINGO!
It's cold and snowy. A good time to stay in, snuggle under a blanket with a bowl of popcorn, and read! What does that have to do with Bingo? The more you read, the more books you can cross off on your bingo card! Five X's gives you Bingo and a prize!
March – Spring into Research?
Choose an author that you like. Find 3 facts about that person and write them down under their printed picture with his or her name. That's it!
April - The Golden Ticket
Not so long ago in a book not so far away, Mrs. Barber hid a few golden tickets! If you find the golden ticket, read the book, and answer a few questions, you win!
May - Pets Read?!
What else do you think they do all day while you're at school? They've watched you read all year and know what a good reader you have become, and how much you have learned! They want to try it! Take a picture of your pet, yes, your pet, reading and bring it in!
Good LUck!
